“When a doctor looks at a patient, what do they see? The disease or the person? I believe you can’t treat a patient without understanding who they really are. And sometimes the only course of treatment is breaking the rules.” - Oliver Wolf

I watch a lot of TV, but I often struggle to grow attached to medical dramas.

I like to blame Grey’s Anatomy for coming into my life so long ago that I’m overly attached to it. The only other medical drama that has come to mean more to me is Grey’s Anatomy’s California-set spinoff series, Private Practice.

I’ve watched other medical dramas over the years — a few seasons of New Amsterdam, a couple of crossover episodes of Chicago Med, and the first few episodes of ER. But nothing ever stuck. Nothing made me stay up late to catch up on episodes or wake up early to squeeze a few in before class or work.

So, I started to accept that maybe medical dramas as a TV subgenre weren’t for me — until I started watching NBC’s Brilliant Minds last week.

Brilliant Minds is inspired by the late Dr. Oliver Sacks, a neurologist who lived with the neurological disorder prosopagnosia — face blindness.

The NBC series stars Zachary Quinto as Dr. Oliver Wolf, a neurologist with prosopagnosia who takes a job at the “overcrowded and understaffed” Bronx General Hospital. No matter where he works, Dr. Wolf has one mission — to change how the world sees his patients by focusing on the person, not the disease. Dr. Carol Pierce — Bronx General’s head of Psychology and Oliver’s best friend — offers him the job and, unexpectedly, gives him a team of interns.

Brilliant Minds Season 1 Episode 1, “Pilot,” sets itself apart from the subgenre’s current slate on TV. Four other medical dramas have premiered in 2024 or will in 2025. Doctor Odyss
