Players motivate me with their success, says Gopi

Hyderabad: Chief coach Pullela Gopichand marshalled his boys to win a first gold and team silver at the Asian Games. Appointed in 2006 to guide the team for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Gopichand has continued as his wards started winning medals at all big events year after year.
And he’s not done yet. “Frankly, I feel tired and bored sometimes, but then the players motivate me with their success.Be it Prannoy, Satwik-Chirag, Srikanth and others. Whenever they win a medal, I feel delighted. Their success is helping me to continue," Gopichand said here on Wednesday.
Gopi made special mention of Prannoy and Lakshya for helping the team win Asiad silver. “Lakshya was brilliant in the team event. Prannoy played with injury. Despite being in pain, he said he would pull it off for the team. A lot of credit goes to our physio Kiran," he said referring to the back injury Prannoy suffered before leaving for the Asiad.
Asked why they risked playing Prannoy as it could have aggravated the injury, Gopichand said it was a collective decision.
Prannoy also said he wanted to take the risk. “I wanted to play and all credit to Gopi sir who took that call to let me play. Yes, there was a lot of pain but I knew I won't get another chance to play Asiad. Whenever we get an opportunity, we have to win," said Prannoy.
Explaining the reasons for his recent successes, Prannoy said, “After Covid I thought I had a good chance. Luckily, Gopi sir started giving us more time. He travelling with us this year is of great help,” Prannoy said. Gopichand said that the focus now is to get as many Indians as possible to qualify for the Olympics. "There are so many tournaments before the April end qualifying date. There is no time to relax," he said.
