Quotes
- With Rahm, you get someone who is both a great strategic thinker and a great tactician. It's great to have someone who knows the Congress inside and out. There can often be major differences between the executive branch and the congressional branch, even when you're from the same party. It will certainly help in terms of getting things done.

Christopher Van Hollen Jr. (born January 10, 1959) is an American Democratic politician and attorney who is serving as the senior U.S. Senator from Maryland since 2007. Van Hollen previously served as U.S. Representative from Maryland's 8th from 2003 until 2007. Van Hollen was the chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, taking the helm in 2023 as Democrats took the majority.
Van Hollen won election to the U.S. House after 12 years in the Maryland state legislature to succeed liberal Republican Connie Morella, who was drawn out by redistricting; after Morella's reelection in 2000, Democratic Maryland Senate President Thomas V. Miller, Jr. stated that he wanted to "draw the 8th out from under Morella". Van Hollen defeated Kennedy family and popular state Senator Mark Kennedy Shriver for the Democratic nomination in a narrow race and defeated Morella in the general election even as Republicans gained the governor's office. Van Hollen served for two terms only when Paul Sarbanes announced he would not seek re-election to a sixth U.S. Senate term in 2006.
