Teaching and supervision
Modules taught
Pritam's main areas of teaching interest and expertise are: development economics, environmental economics, comparative economic systems and competing economic paradigms. Pritam has developed new modules in these fields both at UG and PG levels while at Oxford Brookes University. Pritam takes keen interest in pedagogic theory and practice. In particular, he has explored the dimensions of equal opportunities in teaching concerning curriculum, teaching methodologies and assessment of student performance. He won internal funding to undertake two pedagogic research projects during 2006-07. He is on the editorial board of Brookes eJournal of Teaching and Learning and the International Journal of Pluralism and Economics Education and has co-edited (with M Pearl) a book on pedagogic research (Equal Opportunities in the Curriculum, Oxford, 1999). He was invited to give the key note address at an international conference on Teaching Methodologies in India and Abroad at Baba Farid University, Bathinda, Punjab in India in January 2010 where he spoke on ‘Teaching methodogies: some lessons from the comparative experience of teaching in India and the UK'. Pritam was an external advisor on the validation panels for economics and business degrees at Coventry University and the City University of Birmingham. He is on the Managing Committee of the Association for Heterodox Economics (UK) which endeavours to promote pluralism and diversity in economics teaching and research in the UK and abroad.

Pritam is actively involved in doctoral student supervision as Director of Studies with having supervised three PhDs to successful completion and currently supervising as Director of Studies seven PhD students including one from Burgundy Business School, Dijon and one by publication route. Guru Tegh Bahadur (Punjabi: ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇਗ਼ ਬਹਾਦਰ (Gurmukhi); Punjabi pronunciation:[gʊɾuːt̯eːɣbəɦaːd̯ʊɾᵊ]; 1 April 1621 – 11 November 1675) was the ninth of ten gurus who founded the Sikh religion and was the leader of Sikhs from 1665 until his beheading in 1675. He was born in Amritsar, Punjab, India in 1621 and was the youngest son of Guru Hargobind, the sixth Sikh guru. Considered a principled and fearless warrior, he was a learned spiritual scholar and a poet whose 115 hymns are included in the Guru Granth Sahib, which is the main text of Sikhism.
Guru Tegh Bahadur was executed on the orders of Aurangzeb, the sixth Mughal emperor, in Delhi, India. Sikh holy premises Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib and Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib in Delhi mark the places of execution and cremation of Guru Tegh Bahadur. His day of martyrdom (Shaheedi Divas) is commemorated in India every year on 24 November.
Biography
Early life
Guru Tegh Bahadur was born Tyag Mal (Tīāg Mal) (Punjabi: ਤਿਆਗ ਮਲ) in Amritsar on 1 April 1621. He was the youngest son of Guru Hargobind, the sixth guru. His family belonged to the Sodhi clan of Khatris. Hargobind had one daughter, Bibi Viro, and five sons: Baba Gurditta, Suraj Mal, Ani Rai, Atal Rai, and Tyag Mal. He gave Tyag Mal the name Tegh Bahadur (Brave Sword) after Tyag Mal showed valor in the Battle of Kartarpur against the Mughals.
Tegh Bahadur was brought up in the Sikh culture and trained in archery and horsemanship. He was also taught the old classics such as the Vedas, the Upanishads, and the Puranas. He was married on 3 February 1632 to Gujri.

From around the mid 1970s, he worked as an apprentice under Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the founder of Transcendental Meditation. In 1981, he founded the Art of Living foundation. Shankar was born on 13 May 1956 in Papanasam, Tamil Nadu, to Vishalakshi and R.S.Venkat Ratnam. He was named "Ravi" (an Indian name which means "sun") because his birth was on a Sunday, and "Shankar" after the eighth-century Hindu saint, Adi Shankara, whose birthday was the same day as Ravi Shankar's. Shankar's first teacher was Sudhakar Chaturvedi, an Indian Vedic Scholar and a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi. He graduated from the St. Joseph's University, Bangalore with a Bachelor of Science degree. After graduation, he travelled with his second teacher, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, giving talks and arranging conferences on Vedic science, and setting up Transcendental Meditation and Ayurveda centers. In the 1980s, he initiated a series of practical and experiential courses in spirituality around the globe. He says that his rhythmic breathing practice, Sudarshan Kriya, came to him in 1982, "like a poem, an inspiration", after a ten-day period of silence on the banks of the Bhadra River in Shivamogga, in the state of Karnataka, adding, "I learned it and started teaching it". In 1983, he held the first Art of Living course in Switzerland. In 1986, he travelled to Apple Valley, California, in the US to conduct the first course to be held in North America.
