  • Muvhango: What’s the story behind Albert Mukwevho’s departure?

    Tilo ngwana Rashaka Mokgopo

On Tuesday 29 July 2014 fans of Muvhango’s Albert Mukwevho went to bed heartbroken. This after their favourite character they have known for 17 years was brutally killed by the cousin of his wife.

Not only was Albert’s death premature but also planted a seed of deep emotional trauma in the hearts of many fans who protested “Please bring back our Bertie.”

Although the Muvhango publicity team maintained that Ndivhuwo Mutsila asked to be released from his character, a sentiment widely shared by Ndivhuwo himself, however, the recent media report questions Albert’s departure from Muvhango.

Was Albert pushed to retire? They ask. In his own words, Ndivhuwo said “you get tired after doing the same thing for so long. I’ve done my best and enough is enough. You can feel it in your bones when it’s enough,” he was quoted as saying.

He also told Move! magazine that although he really enjoyed being part of Muvhango, he thinks the time is ripe that he retires from on-screen to focus on his role as the cultural advisor of the soapie.

However, a prominent Sunday tabloid newspaper narrates the story of unsatisfactory explanation regarding Albert’s departure. The newspaper reported that “at the screening, which took place at the SABC’s Henley Studios, in Auckland Park, Muvhango’s publicity team could not convince reporters as to whether Albert willingly retired or if it were imposed on him.”

Muvhango organized a special screening of Albert’s death attended by the media and his colleagues before the episode was broadcasted to the nation. Ndivhuwo did not attend the special screening apparently because he and his real family were still mourning the passing of the character he played.

Among other reasons given to the media was that Ndivhuwo is “too old” and wanted a time off to focus on his other commitments.

Last night the curtains came down on one of Muvhango’s original cast members who has been with the soap opera since its inception about 17 years ago.

Ndivhuho Mutsila who plays the role of stubborn and conformist Albert Mukwevho has left the onscreen production of Muvhango. But his exit is apparently not one of those ‘fok fok pack your bags and leave and never dare to look back.’

In an interview with Move! magazine, Mutsila told Zibusisozethu Sithole that “Although I have enjoyed it, I’m tired and want to carry on with my work as a cultural advisor and translator (of the soapie) and maybe my career in education,” he was quoted as saying.

Mutsila is a teacher by profession and studied at the then Bantu black University of the North, now University of Limpopo.

Although the media shy Mutsila will miss playing Albert, he was nonetheless quick to add that he learnt very little from the character he has played for almost two decades. “I can’t say I’ve learned anything from Albert.”

He went further to add “I’m grateful to have been part of this pioneering series that has done so much in teaching people about the Venda language and Culture.

“I hope there are many spin-offs from it giving opportunities that will continue to develop Venda people and put our culture and our language on the map,” he said.
