Kang Nano S., born in Pasar Kemis, Tarogong Garut, West Java, 4 April , died 24 September ) was a Sundanese (West Javanese) composer and music arranger with a good reputation in Indonesia. He was involved in the Sundanese arts from an early age, and was a student and prodigy of the late composer Mang Koko. He had degrees from the high school and college conservatories in Bandung, S.M.K.I. and A.S.T.I., as well as from STSI Surakarta.

Suratno was a prolific pop and classical composer of over works. He had over cassettes in circulation and many of his songs were performed by popular singers on video and tape. In the s he reshaped pop Sunda to include performance in the pélog tuning system; he created a large number of hit songs that used traditional ensembles like gamelan degung, and successfully blended pop music with Sundanese traditional music. He and his wife, the singer Dheniarsih, often presented performances for foreign visitors at the traditional outdoor stage built next to their home in Bandung.

Suratno taught at the high school conservatory in Bandung, S.M.K.I., and has also taught abroad in Japan and the U.S.A.

His album Kalangkang (English: Shadows) was a best seller in Sundanese music. It contains a mix between traditional West Java music and pop. It features Detty Kurnia, a well known Sundanese singer.

    In his own words:
"If a producer asks me to do a cassette, I will agree to do a fast popular piece for the title cut, but I try to insist that a more difficult piece be included, like a totally instrumental piece without vocal or even reference to a vocal melody. But these pieces don’t sell well, because the producers themselves aren’t brave enough to record them, saying 'nobody will buy this, it’s terlalu nyeni (too "arty".)' There are several of my pieces that couldn’t be distributed because the cassette producer didn’t want them. &#; If I am financially successful in the business world of pop music,

Suratno, Nano prolific Indonesian composer, known as Nano S.; b. Pasar Kemis Tarogong, West Java, April 4, He earned degrees from the Akademi Seni Tari Indonesia (A.S.T.I.) Bandung () and Sekolah Tinggi Seni Indonesia (S.T.S.I.) Surakarta (); also studied with Daeng Sutikna (music), Syafei (literature), Tjetje Somantri (choreography and dance), and, especially, Mang Koko (music). He formed his own dance company and then performed with Koko’s group, Ganda Mekar. He began composing experimental works for degung, a traditional Sundanese chamber ensemble of tuned gongs, drums, and bamboo flute; in his Sangkuriang was performed at the important national festival Pekan Komponis Muda (Young Composers’ Festival); he also began composing highly expressive instrumental music (“karawitan total”), and in mounted Umbul-umbul, involving 75 players in a mixture of over 15 Sundanese styles, on Indonesian TV. Nano S. sees many of his songs as a means of making traditional music more accessible to Sundanese youths; he often recasts classical melodies in forms that conform to popular music styles of the West. Even in his more experimental instrumental works, which he calls “musik total” or “musik murni” (i.e., ’’absolute” music), he neither borrows from foreign sources nor uses diatonic tuning; while such works have not yet found a place in the standard repertoire of Sunda, audiences abroad have been receptive; in , on a commission from the American Gamelan Inst. in Hanover, N.H., he composed and recorded Jemplang Polansky, inspired by his confusion upon listening to the computer music of Larry Polansky, and Galura (Emotion; ), an instrumental solo piece for kecapi (plucked zither). In he toured in Canada and the U.S.; after appearing in Japan (), he became a guest lecturer and composer at the Univ. of Calif, at Santa Cruz (). In he directed the touring program “Sunda: From Village to City,” presented in the U.S. at its Festival of Indonesia. Nano S. i
