Patriots expected to hire former assistant Josh McDaniels as next offensive coordinator
But before his run with the Silver and Black, McDaniels was a highly regarded OC for much of the Tom Brady-Bill Belichck era in New England.
McDaniels first became the Patriots offensive coordinator in 2006 and, in 2007, he oversaw a record-setting offense for a New England team that finished just shy of becoming the second-ever undefeated Super Bowl champ. After three years with the Pats, McDaniels was hired as head coach of the Denver Broncos, a position he held for two seasons.
McDaniels then returned to Foxborough in 2012 where he resumed his post directing the Brady-led offense to great effect. McDaniels' offense finished in the top five in points for seven consecutive seasons (2012-18), and the Patriots won three Super Bowl titles over that span.
In New England, McDaniels' top priority will be developing quarterback Drake Maye, who is coming off a successful rookie season in which he threw 15 touchdowns to 10 interceptions and looked like a future franchise quarterback.
McDaniels has previously shown an ability to work with a young signal-caller as he coached Mac Jones to his best year in the NFL back when he was a rookie in 2021 with the Pats.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The New England Patriots are expected to hire Josh McDaniels as their offensive coordinator, sources confirmed to ESPN on Tuesday.
McDaniels will return to the franchise for a third time, this time to work under coach Mike Vrabel and help tutor promising quarterback Drake Maye, the No. 3 pick in the 2024 draft.
The Patriots are also set to name Detroit Lions defensive line coach/run game coordinator Terrell Williams as their defensive coordinator, sources told ESPN, in what will be a reunion with Vrabel.
New England interviewed McDaniels recently. The team also interviewed Minnesota Vikings assistant quarterbacks coach Grant Udinski, Chicago Bears interim head coach Thomas Brown and Los Angeles Chargers passing game coordinator Marcus Brady for the position, sources said.

He has never coached on a staff with Vrabel, but the two have a connection from the time Vrabel played for the Patriots (2001-08) as a member of three Super Bowl championship teams.
Williams spent 2018 to 2023 with the Tennessee Titans under Vrabel, coaching the defensive line and being elevated to assistant head coach his final season. Vrabel had Williams serve as the head coach in the Titans' preseason opener in 2023.
McDaniels broke into the NFL in 2001 as an assistant coach under Bill Belichick in New England. After leaving in 2009 to become the Denver Broncos' coach until his firing in December 2010 and serving a year as the Rams' offensive coordinator For the fourth time in as many seasons, the New England Patriots have a new offensive coordinator. The Patriots have hired Josh McDaniels as their new OC under head coach Mike Vrabel, about 15 months after the Las Vegas Raiders relieved McDaniels of his head coaching duties in October 2023. When McDaniels joined the Raiders in 2022, he reportedly signed a six-year contract believed to be worth $10 million annually, and Las Vegas is obligated to pay the remainder of that contract. That means the Raiders will be paying McDaniels a hefty sum, even while he works in New England. But how much would the Patriots pay their new OC? Patriots Insider Phil Perry explained how it all works Wednesday while co-hosting 98.5 The Sports Hub's Zolak & Bertrand. "Typically you've got these offsets in these coaches' contracts, right? So, he'll get paid something by the Patriots and then the Raiders essentially make up the difference," Perry said of McDaniels. "The other thing to keep in mind here too is that when he's given the offensive coordinator title, by league rule, you have to pay him a salary commensurate with that job. And those jobs, generally speaking, are paid pretty well. Will he be in the $3, $4, $5 million range where you're at the top of the market when it comes to offensive coordinators?" McDaniels' predecessor, Alex Van Pelt, also signed a multi-year contract with New England prior to last season, so the Patriots will need to pay off the rest of his deal as well. Perry shed light on how much Van Pelt was making as offensive coordinator in 2024. "My understanding was Alex Van Pelt was a shade under $3 million this past year, which actually paid him near the top of the league in terms of offensive coordinator salaries," Perry said. "So, are they just going to carry that salary over and just give that to Josh McDaniels, and n FOXBORO -- Josh McDaniels is the offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots once again. McDaniels has been hired by New England after interviewing with new head coach Mike Vrabel for the role on Tuesday. The team officially announced the hiring of McDaniels on Wednesday. This will be McDaniels' third stint as a coach in New England, having already been the team's offensive coordinator for 14 seasons. McDaniels was on Bill Belichick's staff for all six of New England's Super Bowl titles. Now he's back again to lead the Patriots offense under Vrabel, who was a player for New England during McDaniels' first run with the team. McDaniels will now have a big hand in the development of Drake Maye going forward, and owns a solid history with quarterbacks in New England. McDaniels spent 18 years with the New England Patriots over his first two stints with the franchise, starting as a personnel assistant in 2001. He served as a defensive assistant in 2002 and 2003 before making his way to the offensive side of the ball as the team's quarterbacks coach in 2004, a role he held until 2008. In 2006, McDaniels added offensive coordinator to his job title for the first time. While having Tom Brady as his quarterback certainly played a large role in McDaniels' success as New England's offensive coordinator, he also won games with Matt Cassel, Jimmy Garoppolo, Jacoby Brissett, and Cam Newton at quarterback for the Patriots. He also helped Mac Jones have a solid rookie season, and the Patriots' offense really fell apart after McDaniels left again after the 2021 season. McDaniels was OC for New England's historic season in 2007, when the Patriots set an NFL record by scoring 589 points and 75 touchdowns. It got him some attention as a potential head-coaching candidate, but McDaniels didn't pursue any opportunities. In 2008, McDaniels helped the Patriots get the most out of backup quarterback Matt Cassel after Br
