City Guide: Cienfuegos
Rancho Luna Beach
If you’re looking to enjoy Cuba’s rich marine biodiversity, Cienfuegos is the perfect choice for scuba diving and snorkeling. Less than 20km from the city, Rancho Luna beach is home to one of Latin America’s most extensive coral reefs. Visitors to the area can rent a boat from one of the many companies that line the shore, and within 20 minutes, explore depths of up to 30km and discover an abundance of exotic marine wildlife.
Guanaroca Lagoon
That said, if you’re more inclined to keep your feet dry, Guanaroca Lagoon, just a few kilometers from the beach, is a beautiful spot to witness the flight of Cuba’s gorgeous pink flamingos. Formed by the water from the Guanaroca river as it flows towards the Bay of Cienfuegos, the lagoon is part of 2km squared of protected natural habitat and home to pelicans, pink flamingos, and trogons; a colorful, insect-eating bird that is native to Cuba. Boat tours operate between 8am - 3pm; however, we recommend arriving early to give yourself the best chance of seeing the wildlife before it moves out of the sun and into the shade of surrounding trees and river plants.
El Nicho Park (and beyond)
To complete the Cienfuegos experience, take time to explore the natural wonders of El Nicho park, which lies less than one hour away from the city. Further to the east, you will discover the city of Trinidad, an iconic location that is a must-visit when traveling along Cuba’s south coast.
Cienfuegos, the City Benny Moré Praised as his Favorite
Cienfuegos is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful cities in Cuba. It was dubbed thePearl of the South, after a song by Cuban music icon Benny Moré, who immortalized it in his lyrics as “the city that I like the most”.
“I cannot imagine my life anywhere else”, says Ángel Luis Oliva, a proud native of Cienfuegos. “I’ve been to other places in the world and I even studied at the University of Havana, but I could never live anywhere else.”
This is what happens to many inhabitants of Cienfuegos. Many arts and science personalities have remained in this city despite finding better professional opportunities in the Cuban capital.
The city that Benny Moré praised in song
Lázaro García, one of the most important figures in the nueva trova movement, told the press that Cienfuegos is the city where he needs to live. The artist recognizes that in addition to love and family, “I need the seawall, the people, the city buildings”.
Without fear or regard for the disadvantages of geographical fatalism, other artists like him have managed their careers from “the beautiful city by the sea“, an epithet for which the city of Cienfuegos is also known.
Troubadours like Nelson Valdés, the Pedro and Roberto Novo brothers or writers, such as Marcial Gala and Atilio Caballero, just to mention some of the most contemporary ones, have evoked the charms of the city of Cienfuegos in their work.

And I Stayed In Cienfuegos…
Despite the attractive work proposals that Cienfuegos generates for industries, such as the Oil Refinery, the Thermoelectric Plant, the Cement Factory or the still visualized Petrochemical Complex, this territory is not located in the most receptive provinces of the country, which ranked ninth in the Population and Housing Census of 2012.

Benny Moré Musical artist Bartolomé Maximiliano Moré Gutiérrez (24 August 1919 – 19 February 1963), better known as Benny Moré (also spelled Beny Moré), was a Cuban singer, bandleader and songwriter. Due to his fluid tenor voice and his great expressivity, he was known variously as "El Bárbaro del Ritmo" and "El Sonero Mayor". Moré was a master of the soneo – the art of vocal improvisation in son cubano – and many of his tunes developed this way. He often took part in controversias (vocal duels) with other singers, including Cheo Marquetti and Joseíto Fernández. Apart from son cubano, Moré was a popular singer of guarachas, cha cha cha, mambo, son montuno, and boleros. Moré started his career with the Trío Matamoros in the 1940s and after a tour in Mexico he decided to stay in the country. Both Moré and dancer Ninón Sevilla made their cinematic debut in 1946's Carita de cielo, but Moré focused on his music career. In the late 1940s, he sang guaracha-mambos with Pérez Prado, achieving great success. Moré returned to Cuba in 1952 and worked with Bebo Valdés and Ernesto Duarte. In 1953, he formed the Banda Gigante, which became one of the leading Cuban big bands of the 1950s. He suffered from alcoholism and died of liver cirrhosis in 1963
