Stone Temple Pilots, commonly abbreviated as STP, is an American rock band formed in San Diego, California, in 1989. Originally consisting of lead vocalist Scott Weiland, guitarist Dean DeLeo, bassist Robert DeLeo, and drummer Eric Kretz, the band's lineup remained unchanged from its formation until the firing of Weiland in February 2013. Vocalist Chester Bennington joined the band in May 2013 but left amicably in November 2015. In 2016, STP launched an online audition for a new lead vocalist;Jeff Gutt was announced as STP's new lead singer on November 14, 2017.

After forming under the name Mighty Joe Young, the band signed with Atlantic Records and changed its name to Stone Temple Pilots. Their debut album, Core, released in 1992, was a major commercial hit, and STP went on to become one of the most successful bands of the 1990s, selling more than 18 million albums in the United States and 40 million worldwide. STP released four more studio albums: Purple (1994), Tiny Music... Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop (1996), No. 4 (1999), and Shangri-La Dee Da (2001), before separating in 2003, after which the band members partook in various projects (most notably Velvet Revolver and Army of Anyone). STP eventually reconvened in 2008 for a reunion tour and released their self-titled sixth album with Scott Weiland in 2010. After firing Weiland in 2013, the band recruited Chester Bennington, who they would tour with as their lead vocalist up until his departure in 2015. The band's only material with Bennington was the 2013 EP High Rise. STP has since released two albums with Gutt on vocals: its second self-titled album in 2018 and eighth studio album, Perdida, in 2020.

Last update: August 3, 2020: This page is currently under heavy revision.

2020 - "Perdida" was released on February 7. The coinciding acoustic tour, dubbed 'An Evening with Stone Temple Pilots' was cancelled due to singer Jeff Gutt needing surgery on a herniated disc. Subsequently, the band's Australian Tour with Bush and Live in April was postponed to 2021 due to the CoVid-19 pandemic. Not much later, the summer tour opening for Nickelback was also cancelled. On July 31, STP offered a unique pay-per-view feature through nugs.net, showing recently recorded 'live in studio' performances of all tracks from their 1992 debut "Core", except "Wet My Bed".

2019 - The new year started in February with a tour of South America, after which the band took some time to record another new album, the acoustic-based "Perdida". Recorded, mixed, mastered and packaged before the band embarked on their first European tour in 9 years, the album would be kept under wraps for another six months, until it was officially announced on December 2.

2018 - A second single, 'Roll Me Under' was released on January 31. That same day, the band announced the March 16 release of their new self-titled record. STP extensively toured North America starting two weeks before the album's release through the end of the year, ending with a unique acoustic concert in Norwood, Massachusetts on December 14.

2017 - With no official word on a new singer at this time, internet speculation continued, while the band took their time to see how they would gel with Jeff Gutt on a personal and professional level. They started working on new material. During the summer, Chester Bennington sadly died on July 20, 2017. It would take another few months until October, before the band would speak about their singer search again, with Dean stating that it was "going great," and that the band was "working on new m

    Stone Temple Pilots - Discografia.

As the story goes, when Scott Weiland and Robert DeLeo first met at a Black Flag gig in California, they got into a conversation about their girlfriends. After realising that they were both dating the same woman they decided to not let it come between them but to instead form a band and they went on to sell more than 40 million records worldwide.

Quickly rising through the growing alternative music scene, the band's polished stadium rock sound made them an accessible taster of grunge angst with their debut album 'Core' shooting to number three in the US charts in 1992. The band won a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance and followed it with it the number one album 'Purple' in 1994 as Weiland's gravelly voice and heartfelt lyrics made them one of the biggest acts of the era. The band split briefly in 1995 when Weiland was arrested for possession of heroin and cocaine, but returned with the platinum albums 'Tiny Music... Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop' (1996) and 'No 4' (1999), before splitting again in 2002. Weiland went on to join the supergroup Velvet Revolver with Slash from Guns N' Roses but, after settling their differences, Stone Temple Pilots reunited in 2008.

A series of performances and headlining appearances marked their comeback in 2008 which they followed with a self-titled album in 2010. The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200. After a series of disagreements between Weiland and the band, with rumours that he was fishing for an invitation back into Velvet Revolver, it was announced that Weiland had been fired from the band. Weiland sued over the rights to perform with the Stone Temple Pilots name, but an out of court settlement ruled in the band's favour.

In 2013 the band recruited Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington who performed with them as a special guest. He later became an official member of the band with the release of his first single with Stone Temple Pilots, 'Out of Time'. The new line-up gav
