Description

When Dallas turned 150 years old in 1991, Rose-Mary Rumbley celebrated the occasion by writing The Unauthorized History of Dallas-a history that takes the scenic route. Rose-Mary, whose German immigrant forbears began arriving in Dallas after the Civil War, accumulates histo-ry almost by osmosis. And she finds humor in ever snaggle-toothed story. Her peephole history includes a collection of stories accumulated by her family, many originally published in the Oak Cliff Tribune. Rose-Mary explores everything in Dallas from South Fork and that "awful" Texas accent, to a two-bit Santa, and Dallas personalities are dis-cussed, including Robert L. Thornton, Doak Walker, Rufus C. Burleson, and even Bonnie and Clyde. There is also coverage of businesses-the department store bunch, Pegasus and Mobil Oil, Texas Instruments, LTV, and more.

You Know You're Old When...

June/July 2021

You know you're old when you remember seeing the movie, CONAN THE BARBARIAN!

I have a friend who thought Conan was a true man of history!   No!  He came out of the mind of Robert E. Howard, a writer from Cross Plains, Texas, a little town south of Eastland, if you are driving to Brownwood!  Don't blink, or you'll miss it!

Robert was born in 1906, an only child, who always wanted to be a writer.  His father was a doctor, who was often involved in get-rich-quick schemes, thus, the family was always in debt.  The mother contracted tuberculosis, and remained a burden to Robert and his father.  This was not a joyous situation, so it's understandable why Robert began to write what we call science fiction today.  He tried to escape the scene.   He graduated from high school and attended the Baptist college, Howard Payne, and it was here that an English teacher encouraged him to keep on writing.

WEIRD TALES, a magazine of the time, was the first to publish his stories.  He also wrote a column about the oil business for the local paper.  He also took up boxing, and with this sport he built up his body.  He was not a wimp!  But he always remained close to his mother.  She was dying, when Robert asked the nurse if she was ever going to be well.  When he nurse replied, "No!"  Robert took his gun, went out in the back yard and shot himself!  He was 30 years old.  Very sad!

Robert's stories were buried until Mr. Universe came to Hollywood from Austria.  Casting directors were stuck with this "hunk" who spoke English with a decided German accent.  What to do with him?  This is when someone dug up Robert's story of Conan the Barbarian! Arnold Schwarzenegger became a star as Conan, and Robert E. Ho
