Rising Egyptian Star Yasmina El-Abd on Gen Z Female Empowerment in the Arab World and Reprising Her Role as Zeina in Netflix’s ‘Finding Ola’

Rising Egyptian star Yasmina El-Abd, whose acting career has been on a roll since she was 12, stands as testimony to the fact that female empowerment is becoming a major theme in the Arab world’s film and TV output.

Born in Switzerland to an Egyptian family, El-Abd took acting classes in London and landed her first acting job in the well-received short “The Shadow of Cairo” playing a 12-year-old named Maya who seeks vengeance for her mothers’ death by becoming a superhero of sorts who chases down sexual harassers in Cairo.

A slew of roles have followed, including in powerful Arab patriarchy drama “Daughters of Abdul-Rahman”; as well as in HBO Max kids series “Theodosia,” where El-Abd is the only Egyptian cast member and plays one of the leads, Princess Safiya; the groundbreaking Arabic-language musical feature “Sukkar,” and, of course hit Netflix series “Finding Ola” – the second season of which just dropped – in which she plays Zeina, a surrogate daughter of the show’s happily divorced protagonist.

Yasmina El-Abd – who recently turned 18 and acts and sings in English, French and Arabic – spoke to Variety about her career progression and why, besides being an actor and singer, she’s now ready to take some further steps.

When did you start realising how important female empowerment is in the stories you play on screen?

Pretty soon. Right after “Shadow of Cairo,” which was significant in terms of spreading awareness about sexual harassment in the Middle East, I sent a self-tape to [director] Zaid Abu Hamdan that ended up working out. In “Daughters of Abdul-Rahman” I played Saba Mubarak’s daughter. My character arc in this film was all about e

‘Finding Ola’ Season 2 Review: An Average Story With A Good Dose Of Humor

The best part about Finding Olais definitely the humor. One cannot help but fall in love with Ola—her exaggerated expressions and her fun banter. The seamless blend of the social commentary with the lighthearted humor that one would typically expect from a rom-com is what makes the series stand out. Finding Olahas stuck to its visual style in the second season. You cannot help but be reminded of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Fleabagevery time Ola breaks the fourth wall. Perhaps it is because both shows belong to the same genre, or simply because Fleabag has set the standard too high.

The first season was more about Ola rediscovering herself as she tried to navigate her life as a recently divorced single woman. From successfully starting a busines

He was known for his slapstick humor and has been compared to Charlie Chaplin. He began his acting career in 1939 with the film Khalaf El-Habayeb (1939; Arabic: خلاف الحبيب, romanized: The Son of the Dears).

A Google Doodle on 15 September 2011 commemorated Yassine's 99th anniversary of birth.

    About his life

He was born in the governorate of Suez and later moved to Cairo in the early 1930s to pursue his artistic career as a singer. However, his appearance and light-heartedness prevented him from succeeding in singing. Ismail possessed the qualities that made him a star among entertainers as he was a singer, monologist, and actor. He remained one of the pioneers in this art form for a decade, from 1935 to 1945. Later, he ventured into cinema, and films were produced under his name after films were made under Leila Murad's name.
