  • 'I want to coach’: Veteran goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs contemplates life off the pitch

Moeneeb Josephs is quick to admit he never considered a future in coaching but is now reveling in his new role as assistant at AmaZulu.

The ex-Bafana Bafana goalkeeper was appointed to back up Ayanda Dlamini after the removal of coach Jozef Vukusic at the start of the month and after one match on the bench with the technical team‚ he is now thinking about whether to carry on playing or turn to a future in coaching.

Joseph’s infectious personality means he is a popular figure at the club and players have spoken of renewed enthusiasm on the training pitch because of the input from the veteran.

“Can I tell you why I’m having so much fun?” he asked TimesLIVE on Thursday.

“They put me on the sidelines” explained the 39-year-old‚ who last played at the end of August and had been relegated down to third choice at the club‚ behind Siyabonga Mbatha and Neil Boshoff.

“I wasn’t involved with the team. Whenever they played‚ or whenever they trained 11 versus 11‚ I was sitting on the outside.

“I was far away from the action and it was frustrating me.

“And then they told me: ‘Moeneeb‚ you are the assistant coach now’.

“I was so excited. I haven’t stopped running at training‚ I think I’ve never run as much in my whole career!” he laughed.

“I never thought I’d enjoy coaching.

“But as soon as I took a session and I could see the response from the players‚ I immediately loved it.

“I said to myself‚ ‘this is what I want to do. Nothing else. I want to coach’.”

Dlamini and Josephs have had just one match in charge‚ the shock 1-0 win at Soccer City over Premier Soccer League leaders Kaizer Chiefs‚ which lifted AmaZulu off bottom place in the standings.

Before the game‚ Josephs was standing watching the players walk around the pitch as they always do after arriving at the venue.

“I started feeling tears welling up in my eyes and a lump in my throat.

“It hit me that I might never ge

    Senzo Meyiwa

    South African footballer (1984–2014)

Senzo Robert Meyiwa (24 January 1984 – 26 October 2014) was a South African professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper for and captained both Orlando Pirates in the Premier Soccer League, and the South Africa national team.

He was shot and killed in a home invasion on 26 October 2014.

    Club career

    Orlando Pirates

    Beginnings (2005-2012)

Meyiwa was a goalkeeper of Orlando Pirates from 2005 as the backup goalkeeper to Francis Chansa until 2008. The arrival of new coach Milutin Sredojević, the Pirates gave Meyiwa his debut against AmaZulu F.C. on 8 November 2006, in a match which the Pirates won 2-1. In 2008, after the departure of Francis Chansa to Engen Santos, Pirates brought Moeneeb Josephs from Wits University in 2008 and Meyiwa again had to be the backup goalkeeper.

    Becoming a starter (2012-2014)

In the 2012 season, interim coach Augusto Palacios gave Meyiwa some games, and the new coach of Pirates Roger De Sa also gave Meyiwa games due to Josephs' shoulder injury in the 2012 season.

Josephs left Pirates in 2013 to Bidvest Wits, after seeing that he was no longer the first-choice goalkeeper. Pirates brought Ghanaian goalkeeper Fatau Dauda in 2013 season, but Meyiwa continued to start and Dauda played only 3 games for Pirates before leaving to Chippa United in 2014.

Meyiwa is known for saving penalties in the CAF Champions League 2013 against TP Mazembe, when he saved two penalties which were both taken by Tresor Mputu. Though Pirates lost 1-0 in that match, they won on an aggregate of 3–2.

Meyiwa guided Pirates to the final against Al Ahly SC, which Pirates lost 3-1 on aggregate.

    Captaincy (2014)

Meyiwa was made captain of Orlando Pirates by coach Vladimir Vermezovic in his last four games for Pirates before his death after then club captain Lucky Lekgwathi was not playing and he was also made captain of Bafana Bafana by coach Shakes Mashaba in

Former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs believes Sipho Chaine has the potential to succeed Ronwen Williams as Bafana Bafana's first-choice goalkeeper.

Since joining the club from Chippa United in 2022, Chaine has been instrumental in goal for the Soweto giants, helping them secure five domestic cup titles.

His impressive performances have earned the 27-year-old a call-up to the national team. However, he currently faces competition from captain and Yashin Trophy nominee Williams.

He also made history as the first African goalkeeper to be nominated for the prestigious Yashin Trophy at the Ballon d'Or awards.

However, Josephs, who played for Bafana at the 2010 World Cup, has tipped Chaine to eventually take over the reins from Williams.

“Chaine has the stature and the capability to go to the next level,” Josephs said on the Soccer Beat Podcast on YouTube.

“And what is also a big plus for him as well is that he has good goalkeeper coach in Tyron Damon,” said the 44-year-old Josephs.

“As a goalkeeper, Chaine just needs that confidence in defence and you can see now that he is starting to gain that understanding with the continuity that Jose Riveiro has created with the defence.

“You can see him grow in stature, you can see him become this keeper, in few years time with the continuity and the training and the mindset that he has now.

“He will definitely take over the reigns from Ronwen Williams because we all have that where we go up and we move along.”
