    1. Jon gordon age

Ruby has been teaching so long that she taught the grandparents of some of her current students.

She is 95 years old and is a substitute teacher at Birch Lane elementary school in Massapequa, NY.

I met her while speaking at her school a few weeks ago and thought she was in her 70’s, not 90’s.

I couldn’t believe she was 95 and when you watch this video I think you’ll be surprised too.

I asked her what her secret was.

She said being positive and having a positive attitude was key.

Of course, I loved hearing that as I had just shared the importance of positivity as part of my Energy Bus presentation to the school. Their theme this year is all about Positive Energy.

I asked Ruby if she intentionally tried to stay young.

She said she never thought about age. She felt blessed to still be teaching after all these years. She said, “You know schools aren’t hiring teachers my age.” I wanted to say that’s because there aren’t many people, including teachers, your age. :)

She said she was always grateful for the opportunity to teach and still is. It was clear that gratitude was and is a big part of her life and she lives with a grateful heart.

The last secret was that she lives with purpose and a feeling of relevance. She shared how many of her former students who are now teachers were there to celebrate her 90 and 95 birthday. It is clear she loves making a difference and has no plans to stop teaching and impacting others.

Ruby said she knows she has an expiration date and keeps looking for it but can’t find it. :)

She loves her job. She loves her students. She loves making a difference. She is grateful for all of it and stays positive through it.

We often make life complicated, but Ruby’s recipe is simple, powerful and a great lesson for all of us.

We may not have her great genes, but we can certainly adopt her great attitude and mindset to live as long and as happy as possible.

    Have a great week!

    Jon

  • 54 Years - 54 Lessons

I turned 54 January 20th. I've learned a lot over the years and thought it would be fun and hopefully helpful to share 54 lessons I've learned along the way.

I believe age is just a number. My motto each year has been younger, stronger, wiser and better. I often tell my kids I refuse to age. But I have to admit that turning 54 has made me reflect on life, where I've been and where I'm going. I have decided I'm going for 100. In the words Jon Bon Jovi, I'm more than halfway there... living on a prayer.

I want to thank you for allowing me to speak into your life with this newsletter. It's been one of the most special and meaningful things I've done with my life. Thank you for reading it!

Here are my 54 lessons in 54 years:

1.) You don't choose when you were born but you can make a lot of choices that determine how you live.

2.) The greatest gifts you can give your children is to love and believe in them. My parents did that for me.

3.) If you want something you will have to work for it.

4.) A teacher or coach who believes in you can change the course or your life.

5.) Be nice to everyone in high school. My high school friend Mark Rathjen is the reason why I got on the Today Show years ago that helped launch my career as a writer.

6.) Grit is not something you develop. It's something we are all born with. The key is to remember you've always had it.

7.) Don't worry about your greatness in the future. Just be great today.

8.) Do your best and let God do the rest. I used to worry so much. When I stopped worrying and started trusting things worked out.

9.) It's more important to have vision than plans. You'll often have to change plans to realize your vision.

10.) Talkers talk and doers do. Be a doer.
